Transportation serves as a critical driver of economic growth across Chinese Mainland, the Hong Kong SAR, and globally, driving escalating societal demand for next-generation transportation professionals trained in innovation and interdisciplinary education.

Existing educational frameworks often lack the breadth to address the convergence of emerging technologies (e.g., AI, 5G/6G, and multi-modal systems) with traditional transportation engineering. The MSc program in Smart Transportation addresses this gap by delivering comprehensive training to cultivate experts who can design and manage intelligent, sustainable mobility systems.

This program aims to benefit students in these ways:
(1) Develop interdisciplinary competence: Equip students with broad engineering knowledge to foster collaboration across disciplines (e.g., transportation, data science, and telecommunications);
(2) Build domain expertise: Provide specialized training in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), covering core principles from traffic flow theory to AI-driven optimization; and
(3) Prepare for emerging challenges: Arm students with skills to tackle frontier issues such as Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) integration, sustainable mobility transitions, and smart infrastructure management—positioning them as leaders in evolving industry and research landscapes.

4. Industry Internship Project

     8 credits

Students are required to participate in a guaranteed internship of 6 months. The internship should be conducted at a local company in the Greater Bay Area. Each student will be supervised jointly by one academic supervisor from INTR Thrust and one industry supervisor from an industry partner. The internship will be conducted in two phases: Industry Internship I will be conducted in the Summer Term of the first year, while Industry Internship II will be conducted in the Fall Term of the second year.

 5. Capstone Project

     6 credits

Students are required to undertake a one-term independent project addressing an impactful problem arising from the industry in the area of Smart Transportation. The project will be supervised by a faculty member from INTR. Each student is required to submit a project report and pass an oral defense. The project is expected to be completed in the Spring Term of the second year.
